Unlock the secrets of **Gunja** (*Abrus precatorius*). Learn how the ancient Ayurvedic process of **Shodhana** detoxifies these potent seeds, transforming a "poison" into a legendary remedy for hair growth and pain.

In modern chemistry, a toxin is a toxin. But in the ancient science of Ayurveda, toxicity is often seen as "potency" that hasn't been refined. Gunja (Abrus precatorius) is the ultimate example of this alchemical transformation through a process called Shodhana.

Why Purify Gunja?

The raw seed contains Abrin, which is highly toxic to the blood. However, Ayurveda categorizes Gunja as a Upavisha (semi-poisonous). Through Shodhana, we remove the "visha" (poison) while retaining the "guna" (medicinal quality).

The Traditional Process (Svedana)

  1. Dolayantra Method: The seeds are tied in a muslin cloth bag (Pottali).

  2. The Media: This bag is suspended in a pot filled with Godugdha (cow’s milk) or Kanji (fermented rice water).

  3. The Heat: The liquid is boiled continuously for 3 to 6 hours.

  4. The Result: The heat and the fats in the milk bind to the toxic proteins, neutralizing them. The seeds are then washed in warm water and dried, becoming the safe, medicinal Sudha Gunja.
